  • Google Analytics - A free, powerful tool that gives everyone a way to get insights into their web traffic... (all you have to do is add a line of Javascript to your site and connect it to your Google account...)
  • Useit.com - An analyst who writes some very interesting articles/research on user experience. Ironically, he's often criticized for having an unattractive site...
  • Wikipedia's article on Search Engine Optimization - It's my understanding that the most important parts of legitimate "search engine optimization" are accurate, clear and relevant site descriptions, excellent content, and good PR from legitimate news outlets/organizations (and of course, having a unusual name and a good domain name helps!). However, some business areas are extremely competitive and having a listing high in the ranks for a generic search can be important (e.g., "web designer in los angeles" turns up 78 million pages on Google as of 8/28/2007), depending on how you get (and how you want to get) your business...
